For over four years, we have awaited the “2020 United Methodist Church General Conference” that was postponed three times due to Covid concerns. But now, at last, it is only a matter of a few weeks away.
With voting delegates gathering from across the globe, The United Methodist Church will assemble April 23 – May 3, 2024, in Charlotte, North Carolina, for our UMC General Conference. The theme this year will be from Psalm 46:10 - “Be Still and Know.” Major portions of the event will be live-streamed via United Methodist Communications. You can check out watching and participating by going to our UMC denominational website: https://www.umc.org/en/who-we-are/structure/general-conference.
Together, delegates will consider revisions to the denomination’s laws and structure, adopt resolutions on current moral, social, and economic issues, and set a budget for missional priorities and programming. As the top policymaking body of the global United Methodist Church, General Conference is the only entity that speaks for the denomination.
If you want to dig deep into all the different facets of this gathering, and read extensively on the topics, proposals, meetings, and scour hundreds of pages of resources to help you understand the enormous work and complexity of this system, you need to log on to this website:
https://www.resourceumc.org/en/churchwide/general-conference-2020
This page will lead you into viewing all of the legislation being presented as well as the larger “master plan” proposal for eight new “Regional Conferences” globally to create decentralized power to create what will be considered contextualized theology and ministry. The Conference will also explore updated versions of church law to allow for continued disaffiliation for churches, pastors, or even conferences.
Prayer guides are also available on this link, but we have printed off copies and placed them on the Narthex counter for you to take and utilize during this conference. May we remain calm, faithful, hopeful, and resilient as we make our passage through this defining moment of our denomination’s life and story.
Many blessings,
