Stephen Colbert is a funny and sharp comedian and cultural critic. He is an American comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, and television host. He is best known for hosting the satirical Comedy Central program The Colbert Report from 2005 to 2014 and the CBS talk program The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He also is a profound theologian, at least when it comes to understanding the big view that all of life is sacred, even the hard and suffering parts. His own testimony proves it.
He says, in his interview with Anderson Cooper from CNN, “What punishments are not gifts from God.” This quote Stephen Colbert uses in his reflections on the sacred nature of our suffering actually comes from J.R.R. Tolkien, with the mythology of Elves and men who will live forever. It seems an odd statement, even counter-intuitive, that anybody would consider bad things in life as possible “good gifts” from heaven.
Job came to understand this odd-seeming contradiction of the realities of life and gratitude. Job’s wife was angry at the calamity, heartache, and personal devastation they and he had experienced. She wanted him to evaluate his life suffering by taking this action: “Curse God and Die!” But Job, sensing that gratitude and faith is for every part of life, not just the blessed times, responded back with this: “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (Job 2:10).
I find Stephen Colbert’s reflections on gratitude to be profound and life-altering. If we can embrace a mindset that is able to be grateful for hard life passages, then we become the victors instead of the victims. This is undoubtedly why the Apostle Paul commanded God’s people: “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NASB).
There is only one way to live successfully and healthily as we journey through life:
Expressing GRATITUDE for our past and HOPE for the future!
