“Reaching out to people affected by cognitive change”

Since 2023

Who We Are

Inspired by Seattle Momentia, and the Memory Café movement around the world, our Whidbey Island Momentia group was born out of the need for dementia-friendly support in our island community. We offer gatherings of fun, support, connection, and education. We are a group of volunteers, many of us having a personal connection to dementia, wanting to support the philosophy that living our best life with dementia means finding moments of joy, staying connected, and utilizing resources to help with the daily challenges and tough decisions of the dementia journey.
We invite you to join us, and hope to see you soon.

What We Do

Let’s Get Together: Memory Café
Memory Café is a wonderfully welcoming place for individuals with any form of memory loss and their care partners. It is also helpful for individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Memory Café is a time to get together for conversation, fun, food, music, and games.

Join us the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month from 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM at Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church.
Let’s Support One Another: Caregiver Support & Reminiscence Group
Are you caring for someone with dementia or a chronic illness? Join this support group for an opportunity to connect with others who understand the unique challenges of caregiving. Share experiences, find strength in community, and be encouraged as you learn tips for the journey - all in a safe, welcoming space. While caregivers meet, your loved one with dementia can enjoy the proven cognitive benefits of memory activities at our Reminiscence Group.

Join us the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Tuesdays of the month from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church.
Let's Go To Lunch
Join us for caregiver lunches held monthly.

Dates, times, and locations TBD. Please see the event calendar below for more information.
Let's Talk Dementia
A time to ask questions and hear information on living with cognitive change in hopes we can make the dementia journey more comfortable. Presented by specialists from Northwest Regional Council quarterly.

Please see the event calendar below for more information on upcoming talks.
Brain Health and Dementia Community Awareness
In April 2026, Whidbey Island Momentia received a grant from the Washington Department of Health to promote Brain Health and Dementia awareness. The grant was awarded to community organizations, who are busy in dementia friendly programming, with the intent of educating their community about brain health and dementia. The interactive presentation talks about brain health, modifiable risk factors, early signs of dementia and importance of early diagnosis. The good news is research shows we can take action to change our cognitive resilience.

To attend a talk, please register in the event section below.

Our Story

Whidbey Island Momentia began when COVID put everything online, which is how we learned about the program of support called Memory Café. In 2023, we started Memory Café on Whidbey Island. We soon added educational events called Let’s Talk Dementia. In 2025, we started offering a Caregiver Support Group with a Reminiscence Group for care receivers. In 2026, we received the BOLD Initiative Grant to be Trusted Messengers to deliver Brain Health and Dementia Awareness talks to the community.

We are listed in the Memory Café Alliance (MCA) national directory. We use the MCA best practices training and attend their idea exchange. We are a part of Dementia Friendly WA Learning Collaborative conversations.

We are grateful to the Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church for supporting us, letting us use their facilities, and providing assistance with materials and resources. We also enjoy collaborating to create community events with Northwest Regional Council (NWRC) and Island Senior Resources (ISR).

Our programs are ever-developing, and we welcome people who want to share their talents: musicians, artists, volunteers in a variety of capacities. They are invaluable resources who remind us why community connection is so important.
