All members of our congregation are important to the life of our church family, including our youngest members. We aim to foster faith development and discipleship from a young age through regularly scheduled classes, annual activities, and special events.
Our nursery is available for young children during regular worship services, Wednesday night activities, and other events as needed. Parents/guardians can drop their children off and enjoy their time to worship and fellowship with other adults. Children in the nursery have the opportunity to play and take part in faith-based activities. Following the service or event, parents/guardians pick their children back up in the nursery.
Safety is a priority for us in our Young People's Ministries, especially in the Nursery. All of our Nursery staff have up-to-date background checks through Ministry Safe, Abuse Awareness training, are certified in First Aid & CPR, and hold WA State Food Handler permits.
Sunday School classes are available for children from Nursery-6th grade. Sunday worship is at 10:00 am, and children are dismissed for Sunday School partway through the service. Sunday School teachers will meet the children and youth in the Narthex (outside of the Sanctuary) and lead them to their classes in the basement. Children divide into classes of Nursery (Kindergarten and under), 1st-4th, and 5th-6th grade. Sunday School ends around the same time the worship service does, at which point the teachers will bring children upstairs to Centennial Hall to meet back with their parents for the post-worship Fellowship Time.
Wednesday Night Activities
On Wednesday nights we have Family Night Small Groups, with separate activities for children, youth, and adults. Everyone gathers at 6:00 pm for dinner provided by the parents (different themed pot-lucks) and then splits into their age-based groups. Children in kindergarten and younger have activities in the Nursery; Elementary (1st-4th) and Intermediate (5th-6th) have music time, a Bible lesson, and activities; youth (7th-12th) have games, a lesson, and music; and parents have a Bible study and conversation. We end at 7:45 pm. These activities are all held in the church basement, gathering in God’s Hall.
Each summer OHFUMC hosts many children for a week of Vacation Bible School. VBS is typically in August and takes place Monday-Friday from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Children ages 4 years – entering 5th grade are welcome to participate in VBS to gain a better understanding of God and His many wonders through songs, crafts, story time, snacks, and other fun activities. All children are welcome, regardless of church affiliation.
In order to serve as many children as we do for VBS, it takes the help of many volunteers. We welcome the help of lots of people to serve through decorating, registration, preschool leaders, kitchen crew, station leaders, crew leaders, and more.
